[text: Eng./Ελλ.] O Hussein Haniyeah, 22 ετών, Παλαιστίνιος πρόσφυγας από τη Χάμα της Συρίας ξεκινά σήμερα 16/6/2017 απεργία πείνας μέχρι να γίνουν δεκτά τα αιτήματα του, ενώ διαμένει σε χώρο φιλοξενίας γνωστής Μη Κυβερνητικής Οργάνωσης σε τραγικές συνθήκες. Το μήνυμα του είναι: ‘’Θέλω να ζω με ειρήνη, να συνεχίσω της σπουδές μου, να ενωθώ με τους συγγενείς μου και να έχω μια ήσυχη ζωή’’. Το μήνυμα αυτό εκφράζει τον πόνο και την απελπισία 50.000 προσφύγων που ζουν αποκλεισμένοι στην Ελλάδα σήμερα.
Ο Χουσεΐν λόγω του πολέμου εγκατέλειψε το καταυλισμό προσφύγων των Παλαιστινίων της Χάμα στη Συρία όπου είχε διαφύγει η οικογένεια του μετά την καταστροφή της Αλ Νάκμπα το 1948. To 1948, 700.00 Παλαιστίνιοι κατέφυγαν στην Ιορδανία, το Λίβανο και την Συρία καταδιωγμένοι από τον Ισραηλινό στρατό, όπου και ζουν μέχρι σήμερα. Γεννιούνται, μεγαλώνουν, ζουν και πεθαίνουν σε καταυλισμούς χωρίς εργασιακά και πολιτικά δικαιώματα ή δικαιώματα ιθαγένειας. Όλοι οι Παλαιστίνιοι της Συρίας σαν τον Hussein Haniyeah δεν είχαν ποτέ υπηκοότητα, γεννήθηκαν και μεγάλωσαν σαν πρόσφυγες.
Ο Χουσεΐν γεννήθηκε και μεγάλωσε υπό καθεστώς πρόσφυγα και ο εμφύλιος πόλεμος που ξέσπασε στη Συρία το 2011 τον ανάγκασε να γίνει πρόσφυγας για δεύτερη φορά πριν περίπου τρία χρόνια σε ηλικία 19 ετών. Μαζί με δυο ανήλικα παιδιά, επίσης από την Παλαιστίνη, τα οποία του τα εμπιστεύτηκε η μάνα τους προκειμένου να τα σώσει, ξεκίνησε το ταξίδι της προσφυγιάς με ενδιάμεσο σταθμό την Τουρκία. Έφτασε στην Ελλάδα στις 17 Απριλίου του 2016 μαζί με τα ανήλικα, χωρίς να φαντάζεται , όπως και όλοι οι άλλοι πρόσφυγες, ότι θα βρεθεί σε μια χώρα-ανοιχτή φυλακή.
Μετά από πολλούς μήνες αναμονής του γνωστοποιήθηκε ότι η Ελβετία έκανε το αίτημα του για μετεγκατάσταση ( Relocation) δεκτό. Αλλά λίγες μέρες αργότερα, έμαθε πως από τη στιγμή που εισήλθε στη χώρα μετά τις 20 Μαρτίου 2016, μετά δηλαδή τη συμφωνία Ελλάδας-Τουρκίας, δεν μπορεί να φύγει για την Ευρώπη. Η συμφωνία μεταξύ ΕΕ και Τουρκίας κρατά εγκλωβισμένους στην Ελλάδα χιλιάδες ανθρώπους στερώντας το δικαίωμα να ξαναφτιάξουν τη ζωή τους όπως εκείνοι επιθυμούν. Στερώντας το δικαίωμα ελεύθερης μετακίνησης στους πρόσφυγες, η συμφωνία, διευρύνει το ήδη υπάρχων τραύμα που έχει δημιουργηθεί από τον πόλεμο, τον θάνατο αγαπημένων προσώπων και την βίαιη εξαναγκαστική φυγή.
Μετά την απόρριψή του αιτήματος του ο Χουσείν ξεκίνησε πάλι μια πολύμηνη διαδικασία για να ζητήσει άσυλο από την Ελλάδα. Στο μεταξύ ο πατέρας του εκτελέστηκε στη Συρία στις 17 Φεβρουαρίου 2017 στην προσπάθεια του να εγκαταλείψει τη χώρα και η μητέρα του διαμένει στο Λίβανο μόνη σε ένα εχθρικό για τους Παλαιστίνιους πρόσφυγες περιβάλλον με τα αδέλφια του, δυο ανήλικα παιδιά 15 και 9 ετών.
Πολλοί πρόσφυγες λένε πως στον πόλεμο πεθαίνεις μια φορά αλλά όταν γίνεσαι πρόσφυγας πεθαίνεις κάθε μέρα. Αυτή είναι μια πραγματικότητα που ο Χουσεΐν βιώνει καθημερινά. Τις τελευταίες μέρες η απελπισία αλλά και συνάμα η αξιοπρέπεια του τον οδήγησαν να πάρει την απόφαση για την πιο σοβαρή και επικίνδυνη τακτική διαμαρτυρίας, την απεργία πείνας.
Όλους αυτούς τους μήνες ο Χουσεΐν διαμένει σε ξενώνα φιλοξενίας προσφύγων σε ένα στενό της Ομόνοιας, τον οποίο διαχειρίζεται γνωστή Μ.Κ.Ο. Σε μια από τις πιο αφιλόξενες περιοχές της Αθήνας, η συγκεκριμένη ΜΚΟ έχει λάβει 2.000.000 ευρώ για να στοιβάξει γυναίκες και παιδιά ανάμεσα σε πορνεία και πιάτσες εμπορίου ηρωίνης, μαστροπούς και πρεζέμπορους, αποκαλύπτοντας την παντελή αδιαφορία των θεσμών για τις πραγματικές ζωές αυτών των ανθρώπων. Οι συνθήκες στον ξενώνα, όπως αναφέρει στη δικηγόρο του, είναι τραγικές αφού δεν υπάρχει κανένας σεβασμός προς την ανθρώπινη αξιοπρέπεια και μεταχειρίζονται τους πρόσφυγες όχι με αλληλεγγύη και ανθρωπιά αλλά με υποτίμηση και αδιαφορία, συμβάλλοντας στην ιδρυματοποίηση, τον εγκλεισμό και τον κοινωνικό αποκλεισμό τους.
Παρόλα αυτά οι άθλιες συνθήκες στον ξενώνα για τον Χουσεΐν είναι το λιγότερο από όσα αντιμετωπίζει. Μετά την τρίχρονη ταλαιπωρία του και μετά από 16 μήνες στα στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης που το καθεστώς ονομάζει «καταυλισμούς φιλοξενίας προσφύγων» και σε ένα μικρό άθλιο δωμάτιο στο κέντρο της Αθήνας παρατημένος από τους πάντες , φροντίζοντας 2 ανήλικα παιδιά ψάχνοντας χωρίς ανταπόκριση διαρκώς δουλειά και έχοντας μια ζωή κατεστραμμένη από τον πόλεμο και τις διακρατικές συμφωνίες ζητά να μπορέσει να πάει στην χώρα της Ευρώπης όπου βρίσκονται οι συγγενείς του. Εκεί θα μπορεί να εργασθεί βοηθώντας τη μητέρα του, να συνεχίσει τις σπουδές του και να είναι ελεύθερος να επιλέγει ο ίδιος για τη ζωή του.
Λένε πως η απεργία πείνας μπορεί να έχει καταστρεπτικές συνέπειες για την υγεία του ανθρώπου, δεν λένε όμως ποιες είναι οι συνέπειες της προσφυγιάς, των κλειστών συνόρων, των αναμονών, των συσσιτίων, των προσβολών, των αμέτρητων κοντέινερ, της ανεργίας, και της ψυχολογικής κακοποίησης από τα αρπακτικά των ΜΚΟ. Ποιες είναι οι συνέπειες του να αποφασίζουν κάποιοι άλλοι για τη ζωή σου ή να σου στερούν την ελπίδα. Να στέκεσαι για ώρες σε μια σειρά μαζί με χιλιάδες άλλους που παραδόθηκε η μοίρα της ζωής τους σε αδιάφορους υπαλλήλους, μηχανικές συνεντεύξεις και στο τέλος η απορριπτική απόφαση που σε κρατά φυλακισμένο σε ένα στρατόπεδο ή σε μια τρώγλη στην Ομόνοια, τόπους αθλιότητας όπου Μ.Κ.Ο. κερδίζουν χιλιάδες ευρώ την ημέρα από την δικιά σου τραγωδία.
Εκφράζουμε αμέριστη αλληλεγγύη και στήριξη στον 22χρονο πρόσφυγα Hussein Haniyeah μέχρι να λυθούν τα προβλήματα του. Στην απεργία πείνας του Χουσεΐν υπάρχει η κραυγή των 50.000 προσφύγων που βρίσκονται στη χώρα μας περιμένοντας μια δίοδο προς την ελεύθερη επιλογή τους.
Γιατί όσο τα κράτη θα χτίζουν στρατόπεδα συγκέντρωσης και ξενώνες-κάτεργα, όσο οι Μη Κυβερνητικές Οργανώσεις θα κερδίζουν εκατομμύρια ευρώ εις βάρος των προσφύγων, όσο οι άνθρωποι θα αντιμετωπίζονται σαν ένας ακόμα αριθμός μιας υπόθεσης ανάμεσα σε όλες τις άλλες υποθέσεις, στη Λέσβο, στη Χίο, στην Κω, στην Αθήνα , στα Γιάννενα και στα αμέτρητα στρατόπεδα «φιλοξενίας» της χώρας εμείς θα είμαστε πλάι στους πρόσφυγες.
Να σταθούμε όλοι και όλες μας συναγωνιστές των προσφύγων και φίλοι τους. Ενάντια στον πόλεμο, τα φασιστικά ιδεολογήματα και την καπιταλιστική εκμετάλλευση που εκτοπίζει και αφανίζει τους ανθρώπους, ενάντια στις αποφάσεις μιας Ευρώπης ανισότητας, φτώχειας, ανεργίας, τρομονόμων, απελάσεων και κλειστών συνόρων.
Αν γίνει κατανοητό πως η φυλακή που επιβλήθηκε στους πρόσφυγες είναι ίδια με την καθημερινή φυλακή που επιβλήθηκε σε όλους μας, τότε θα καταλάβουμε ότι η ελευθερία τους είναι και δικιά μας ελευθερία.
Όσο οι μετανάστες είναι φυλακισμένοι – ζούμε όλοι μας στην ίδια φυλακή μαζί τους.
Η ελευθερία των προσφύγων είναι και δικιά μας ελευθερία.

Hussein Haniyeah,aged 22 – HUNGER STRIKE. RECLAIMING A FREE LIFE FOR ALL
Hussein Haniyeah, aged 22, Palestinian refugee From Hama, Syria, has gone on hunger strike as from today, 16/06/17 until his demands are met. He lives in a hostel run by a known NGO, under terrible living conditions. His hunger strike message is simple and immediate: “I want to live in peace. I want to continue with my studies, to reunite with my relatives and to live a quiet life.” This message speaks volumes for the pain and despair of 50,000 refugees stranded in Greece.
Hussein’s left the Palestinian refugee camp in Hama, Syria, where he and his family was displaced after the demolition of Al Nakba in 1948. This was the year when 700.000 Palestinian fled from Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, persecuted by the Israeli Army. They still live in the same camps today, more than half a century later. They are born in refugee camps, they grow up in refugee camps, and they die in refugee camps. They live all their lives in these camps, without working rights, without political rights, without nationality rights. Like Hussein, all Palestinians in Syria never had citizenship rights; they started their lives as refugees and they lived all their lives as refugees.
Hussein was born a refugee and grew up a refugee. After the eruption of the civil war in Syria in 2011, he was forced to become a refugee for the second time, at the age of 19. Alongside 2 underage Palestinian children, whose mother entrusted them to Hussein to flee together in order to save them from the atrocities of war, Hussein started his refugee journey to Europe, through Turkey. When he arrived in Greece on the 17th of April, 2016, with the two underage children, he couldn’t imagine that he would land in a country serving the function of an open prison. Neither Hussein nor any other refugee could have imagined that.
After a number of months on the waiting list, Hussein was notified that Switzerland had accepted his relocation request, as he had family living in Switzerland. Nevertheless, a few days later, he realised that, since he had arrived to Greece after the date that the Greece-EU-Turkey deal was sealed last year (i.e. after the 20th of March, 2016), he could not leave Greece. The deal between EU and Turkey keeps thousands of people trapped in Greece, depriving them of the right to a different start in life, depriving them of the right to choose where and how to live. Depriving refugees of the right to free movement, this deal aggravates the already existing wounds of war, the trauma of unexpected deaths of beloved ones, as well as the trauma of forced, violent mass departures.
Following the rejection of his relocation application, Hussein started the process of requesting asylum status from Greece. In the meantime, Hussein’s father was caught trying to flee from Syria and was executed on 17th February 2017. His mother and his two siblings, children of 9 and 15 years of age, are still in Lebanon, living in an environment hostile to Palestinian refugees.
“At war you die once; once you become a refugee however, you die every day”. This is the way that many refugees describe their reality. And this is the daily reality of Hussein too. Over the last few days, driven from both despair but also from self-respect, Hussein has taken the decision to engage in the most sincere but also the most dangerous form of protest: Hussein has started his Hunger Strike.
For numerous months, Hussein lives in a refugee hostel, located in a tiny street close to Omonia square, which is run by a known NGO. In one of the most unhospitable areas of Athens, this particular NGO has been given 2,000,000 Euro, in order to ‘house’ refugee women and children in an area crammed with brothels, drug dens and controlled by pimps and heroin dealers. The environment chosen to host these people demonstrates the complete indifference of institutions for the lives of real people. As Hussein states through his lawyer, the hostel conditions are horrendous. There is no respect for human dignity in the hostel; the notions of solidarity and humanity are non-existent. The attitude of the hostel staff towards refugees is demeaning and indifferent, which results in institutionalisation, imprisonment and social exclusion.
Regardless the miserable hostel conditions, which Hussein experiences daily, these are not his main worry. After 3 years of suffering, as well as after 16 months in what the establishment names “refugee hospitality camps” which in reality can only be named as concentration camps, Hussein continues to live in a tiny miserable room in the centre of Athens, taking care of two small children, without work, without any source of support from anyone. With his life taken hostage by war and transnational deals, Hussein only asks to be allowed to reunite with his relatives in Switzerland, where he can live with dignity. If he gets permission to leave Greece and to go to that other European country where his relatives are, Hussein will be able to work, to study, to support his mother financially through remittances. In short, he will be able to choose his own life.
They say that hunger strikes have debilitating effects for someone’s health. What they don’t say is how debilitating the effects becoming a refugee are. They don’t say how devastating the experience of closed borders is, how devastating the experience of endless waiting hours is, how devastating the experience of food rations is, how life-scarring the insults can be, how soul-damaging the experience of hiding in countless truck containers is. They don’t say how chronic unemployment deprives the person of his or her sense of agency.They don’t say how the predatory attitude of NGOs towards human suffering furthers the psychological damage already experienced. They don’t say what the consequences are when someone else decides for your own life. Deprived from all hope, queuing for hours, alongside thousands of others, whose life is surrendered to the whims of indifferent bureaucrats, who conduct robotic-like interviews, resulting in the rejection of relocation requests. Decisions that keep you imprisoned in a refugee camp or in a dump close to Omonia square, imprisoned in places through which NGOs earn thousands of Euros a day, benefiting from your tragedy.
We express our full solidarity and support to the 22-year old refugee Hussein Haniyeah, and we will stand by his side until his problems are resolved. The Hunger Strike of Hussein, expresses the inner scream of 50,000 refugees who are stuck in our country, waiting for the channel that would allow them to express their life choices freely.
While the states are building concentration camps and sweatshop-hostels, while NGOs are earning millions of Euros abusing refugees, while people are still considered as yet another case number swamped by all other cases in Lesvos, Chios, Kos, Athens, Yianenna and all the other countless “hospitality” camps, we will stand by all refugees in solidarity.
Let’s all stand by the refugees as friends and join forces to fight for freedom. Let’s all be comrades against the war, against the fascist ideologies. Let’s all stand against the capitalism which mercilessly displaces and destroys people, let’s all stand against the decisions of the Europe of inequality, poverty, unemployment, terror laws, deportations and closed borders.
When we realise that, the imprisonment imposed on refugees is the same everyday imprisonment that has been imposed upon all of us, this is when we will realise that their freedom is our freedom.
