John Holloway (born 1947) is a lawyer, Marxist economist and philosopher, whose work is closely associated with the Zapatista movement in Mexico, his home since 1991. He was born in Dublin, Ireland, and has a PhD in Political Science from the University of Edinburgh. He is currently a teacher at the Institute for Humanities and Social Sciences at the Autonomous University of Puebla.
His 2002 book, Change the World Without Taking Power, has been the subject of much controversy in Marxist circles, and contends that the possibility of revolution resides not in the seizure of state apparatuses, but in day-to-day acts of abject refusal of capitalist society – so-called anti-power, or ‘the scream’ as he puts it repeatedly. Thus, he is considered by supporters and critics to be broadly Autonomist in outlook, and his work is often compared and contrasted with that of figures such as Antonio Negri.

reaction
to the world today
is to scream.
Capitalism is leading us to the total destruction of humanity.
It is obvious that we need to change the world radically.
But we do not know how to do it.
Experience has shown that it cannot be done through the state, but then how?
To ask how to change the world without taking power is to ask a question that is obviously necessary, but apparently absurd. It obliges us to rethink everything around us, not just forms of organisation but the meaning of work, space, time, everything. We realise that the state imprisons our minds, forces us to think in a certain way about politics and social change. To forget about the state and realise that we must change the world ourselves is a liberation that opens up new perspectives of thought and action.”

η μόνη λογική αντίδραση
απέναντι στον σύγχρονο κόσμο
είναι να ουρλιάξεις.
Ο καπιταλισμός οδηγεί σίγουρα την ανθρωπότητα σε καταστροφή…
(Συμφωνούν σε αυτό πλέον και όλοι οι επιστήμονες
που μελετούν την καταστροφή της Γης).

Είναι φανερό λοιπόν οτι πρέπει να αλλάξουμε ριζικά τον κόσμο και την ζωή μας.
Αλλά δεν ξέρουμε πως να το κάνουμε αυτό !
Η εμπειρία έδειξε οτι δεν μπορούμε να αλλάξουμε τον κόσμο παίρνοντας την εξουσία.
(Η εκμετάλλευση, ο έλεγχος και η ανισότητα δεν τέλειωσαν ποτέ όσο υπήρχε κράτος.

Το να αναρωτιόμαστε πως μπορούμε να αλλάξουμε τον κόσμο χωρίς να καταλάβουμε την εξουσία είναι μια ερώτηση σίγουρα απαραίτητη αλλά και προφανώς παράλογη .
Μια τέτοια ερώτηση μας εξαναγκάζει να ξανασκεφτούμε όλα όσα βρίσκονται γύρω μας,
Το να αναρωτιόμαστε πως μπορούμε να αλλάξουμε τον κόσμο χωρίς να καταλάβουμε την εξουσία είναι μια ερώτηση σίγουρα απαραίτητη αλλά και προφανώς παράλογη .
Μια τέτοια ερώτηση μας εξαναγκάζει να ξανασκεφτούμε όλα όσα βρίσκονται γύρω μας,
όλες τις μορφές οργάνωσης της εργασίας, του χώρου και του χρόνου μας αλλά και τις σημασίες των πραγμάτων και των κοινωνικών σχέσεων…
Αισθανόμαστε ότι όλα αυτά που περιορίζουν
τη σκέψη μας και την ελεύθερη δράση…μας εξαναγκάζουν να
ζούμε και να σκεφτόμαστε με ένα
συγκεκριμένο λανθασμένο τρόπο τα πολιτικά και
κοινωνικά ζητήματα.
Το να απαλλαχτείς από όλα αυτά που φυλακίζουν τη σκέψη σου
Αισθανόμαστε ότι όλα αυτά που περιορίζουν
τη σκέψη μας και την ελεύθερη δράση…μας εξαναγκάζουν να
ζούμε και να σκεφτόμαστε με ένα
συγκεκριμένο λανθασμένο τρόπο τα πολιτικά και
κοινωνικά ζητήματα.
Το να απαλλαχτείς από όλα αυτά που φυλακίζουν τη σκέψη σου
και περιορίζουν την ελεύθερη δράση σου
και το να συνειδητοποιήσεις ότι πρέπει να αλλάξεις τον κόσμο
είναι μια απελευθέρωση που ανοίγει πολλές νέες προοπτικές…
